| The Hiaki Language: The Letter "H" |

By MARIA F. AMARILLAS AND STAFF
PYT Language Development Department
In this month of January 2005, the new year, we are sharing the
words that begin with the letter "H." Due to space limitations, we
are presenting only fifteen Hiaki terms. Most of these terms are
"Interrogatives" or "Question words."
By the way, we do hope that you enjoyed your holidays! Alleakata
te au yumak, Tu'i Tukaariawi, Hesu Kristota aet yeu yoemtuka'u. (We
have arrived at the Good Night, the night that Jesus Christ was born.)
We hope you were well and received this Holy Night in good health.
Regretfully, we lost four fluent Hiaki speakers this month. Our Hiaki
speakers in the Arizona communities are leaving us all too soon. Only
you, our community members, can reverse this trend.
In January 2005, we are offering Elementary & Conversational
Hiaki classes. These classes will not be as technical as the classes that
we offered previously. Those previous classes were for those individuals
who were seeking to become future language teachers. Come join
us community members and help to preserve our language. We promise
these classes will not be as difficult; rather, they should prove to be
FUN!
